Dr. Arthur J. Carty, O.C., Ph.D., D.Sc., FRSC,
- National Science Advisor to Governments, Academic, Author and Patent Holder


Dr. Carty is executive director of the Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology at the University of Waterloo, special advisor to the President on international science and technology collaboration and research professor in the department of chemistry. From 2004-2008, he served as Canada’s first national science advisor to the Prime Minister and to the Government of Canada. Prior to his appointment as national science advisor, he was president of the National Research Council, Canada’s leading knowledge and innovation organization, for ten years (1994-2004). Dr Carty has a PhD in inorganic chemistry from the University of Nottingham. He has served as chair and member of many boards of directors including the Atomic Energy Control Board (AECB) and its successor CNSC, the Council of the Canadian Space Agency, the Boards of Genome Canada, of MITACS and the Stroke Network both Networks of Centre of Excellence (NCE) and of Environment Canada and National Defense Research. He also serves as Science Advisor to the Premier of Taiwan and member of the Science and Technology Advisory Group (STAG).

Jacques Lamarre, past President and Chief Executive Office of SNC-Lavalin, a global leader in managing and implementing large industrial, infrastructure and power projects, is now Strategic Advisor to Heenan Blaikie LLP. Mr. Lamarre is an Officer of the Order of Canada. In 2010, he was appointed Companion of the Order of the Business Hall of Fame and he was honoured by the Conseil du patronat du Québec, receiving the Career Award. In 2009, he received the Beaubien Award from the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies and was named Governor of Centraide of Greater Montreal in recognition of his role as co-leader of the 2008 campaign. In 2008, the Energy Council of Canada named him Canadian Energy Person of the Year and Engineers Canada awarded him the 2008 Gold Medal for exceptional achievements and distinction in the field of engineering.  Mr. Lamarre is a founding member and past Chairman of the Commonwealth Business Council. He is a past Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Conference Board of Canada and currently a Director of The Royal Bank of Canada, Suncor Energy and P3 Canada. Mr. Lamarre is also a founding member of the World Economic Forum’s Governors for Engineering & Construction.

Joseph W. Bartlett L.L.B

Joseph W. Bartlett, senior counsel in Sullivan & Worcester’s New York office, is a member of the Corporate Department. He has extensive experience in alternative investments, venture capital, emerging companies, corporate restructurings, private equity and buyouts. Mr. Bartlett has acted as counsel to, director of, and shareholder in, a number of development stage companies during his 47-year career in the venture capital business. Mr. Bartlett has also served as trustee of a series of public mutual funds, chair of a public REIT, and as counsel to asset managers throughout his career, including the managers of public and private equity funds. He is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, has served in Senior U.S. Government advisory roles and is the founder and continual contributor to VC Experts.com, a venture capital and private equity knowledge portal.

Dr. Robert Rabinovitch
-Business Leader, Community Leader


Dr. Rabinovitch has held senior positions in the federal government including deputy secretary to the Cabinet for Planning, deputy minister in the Department of Communications and under secretary of state. In 1987 he joined Claridge Inc. as senior vice-president, becoming its chief operating officer in 1990. In 1999, Dr. Rabinovitch re-entered the public arena, becoming president and chief executive officer of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). Dr. Rabinovitch has served on many corporate boards, including those of Cineplex Odeon and NetStar Communications. Dr. Rabinovitch is also a member of the Advisory Board of the Sauve Scholars Foundation and of the Nunavut Trust Investment Advisory Committee. In 2003, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree by York University. A graduate of McGill University and the University of Pennsylvania, Robert Rabinovitch holds an M.A. and a Ph.D. in economics and finance.

Peter Bordes
– Media Entrepreneur, Venture Capitalist, Environmentalist.

Founder CEO and Chairman of the Board of MediaTrust, a digital media, marketing, and publishing solutions organization. Prior to MediaTrust, Mr. Bordes spent much of his career in banking and venture capital and was founder of Mason Cabot investment bank, which specialized in early stage media and technology financing. Mr. Bordes was also a founder and chairman of the board of Empire Media, Inc., a publishing, marketing, and technology enterprise based in New York.  Currently Mr. Bordes is an investor and serves on the boards of or is an advisor to a number of traditional, new media, and technology companies, such as Movi, Northstar Software and jiwire. Mr. Bordes is also an owner and chairman of the board of Roomlinx Inc. He serves on the board of Greater Media Inc. a privately owned radio & newspaper company and is a member of the Chairman’s Council of Conservation International, with the mission to conserve the earth’s biodiversity.

Hank Vander Laan

Henry Vander Laan, of London, was Founder, President and Chair of Trojan Technologies, a leading global water purification business, acquired by Danaher Corporation, a multi-billion dollar global leader in environmental and industrial products. Prior to this, Mr. Vander Laan spent 15 years as Vice President of Operations at Canadian Cable Systems (now Rogers). His current board and leadership involvement includes serving as Chair of the London Biotechnology Commercialization Center (Stiller Center), Co-Chair of the Southwest Ontario Angel Group and serving on the following boards: The University of Western Ontario Board of Governors, the University of Western Ontario Research Park, The Richard Ivey School of Business Group of Companies and Biorem Technologies Inc. Mr. Vander Laan is also a member of the Ontario Investment and Trade Advisory Council and was the Founding Chair of Tech Alliance London.
